Democracy Day Nepal
Every year, Nepal celebrates Democracy Day (प्रजातन्त्र दिवस) on 19th February to commemorate the establishment of democracy in the country. This day honors the sacrifices of brave leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens who fought against autocratic rule to secure freedom and civic rights for all Nepalis.
The History of Democracy in Nepal
Nepal’s journey toward democracy is deeply rooted in the struggle against Rana autocracy, which lasted for over a century from 1846 to 1951. During this period, political power was concentrated in the hands of the Rana prime ministers, and the Shah kings were largely ceremonial. Ordinary citizens had little say in governance, and basic democratic freedoms were denied.
The tide turned with the people’s movement of 1950–1951, also known as the First Democratic Movement (लोकतान्त्रिक आन्दोलन). Inspired by ideals of freedom and equality, political parties and citizens joined forces to demand the end of the Rana regime. After months of struggle, negotiations, and popular uprising, the Rana rule ended in 1951, and Nepal transitioned to a democratic system under King Tribhuvan.
This historic victory restored fundamental freedoms, allowed the formation of political parties, and established parliamentary governance. Since then, 19th February has been celebrated annually as Democracy Day, symbolizing the triumph of people’s will over autocracy.
